What is the Best MMORPG?
Oh man, I am about to make a lot of people angry.
Well, here I go anyway. “What is the best MMORPG?” is a question that is on a lot of peoples’ lips these days. With a ton of selections out there – and more and more being released each year – the choices are almost limitless. Choosing the best MMORPG can be difficult at best – each one has its own style, for the most part. With that being said, though, I think I can make a good case for the best MMORPGs on the market, as described below.
1. What is the Best MMORPG?: Everquest II
This franchise began in 1991, with the release of Everquest. This event helped spark the modern-day MMORPG movement, which earned the original game Game of the Year honors in 1999 and helped give birth to a slew of MMORPGs that quickly followed. Everquest II, the sequel, was released in 2004 and has earned as much critical acclaim – if not more – than its predecessor.
What makes Everquest II great is what makes every great MMORPG great, to put it lightly. The graphics and gameplay are top notch, and actually inspired World of Warcraft, the world’s most popular MMORPG, to a heavy extent. You have a wide selection of races and classes, offering a level of customization seldom seen elsewhere. You also have a superb, close-knit community that is friendly and engaging – the hallmark of a great MMORPG, in my opinion.
The latest installment, Sentinel’s Fate, is set for release on February 16, 2010, and is sure to ring in a new round of players who flock to the stellar Everquest standard in the world of MMORPG. Everquest II offers almost everything that an MMORPGer could want, and that is why I rank it as the best.
2. What is the Best MMORPG?: World of Warcraft
The pinnacle of MMORPGs in terms of sales, World of Warcraft is an MMORPG behemoth that keeps picking up steam every year. Over 11 million people have subscribed to WoW, and more continue to join every day. This is because World of Warcraft has successfully translated the MMORPG to the everyday gamer, and has helped boost the popularity of the genre.
WoW tops many people’s lists, but I wouldn’t claim it as the best because it borrowed heavily from the Everquest franchise of MMORPGs. In a sense, WoW is Everquest II for a broader audience, which to me diminishes its quality a bit. But, WoW is definitely a superb game, and offers hours and hours of fun for anyone who wants to get into the MMORPG genre.
3. What is the Best MMORPG?: Lord of the Rings Online
Right behind WoW on my list is LotRO, based on the enormously-popular and classic Lord of the Rings trilogy. This MMORPG borrows a lot from the record-breaking LotR movies released from 2001-2003 and features perhaps some of the best graphics of any MMORPG, past or present. Its most appealing aspect, though, is the lore and backstory of the game. Any Lord of the Rings fan will adore this game. It loses points because you are more limited to an extent in this game than you are in other MMORPGs, but the level of involvement, story, and graphics make this game a must-have in anyone’s MMORPG collection.

Hi, games are so addictive, personally I like role playing games. Once you start you just do not want to stop. At the moment I have given that luxury up to write articles.
And guess what that is addictive too. haha thanks for sharing this
I have to teach myself more on tech. I use it and made improvements in my skills over the years as self-taught. Will be reading more to learn more. Thanks for sharing.
There are several games out there I enjoy. Most recently I had played Evony for like 8 months, but they seem to be ruining it with the latest release of EvonyII. My husband and I used to play it together. I am in search of a new game similar to it, but did not care for Kingory.
I am delighted I read this hub! I know people who rave about Everquest. I have played World of Warcraft a few times on friends pcs and it's just so cool and so vast! Plus I saw the South Park show that involves WoW, and it is one of their best ever episodes! Just awesome!! Loved this hub! I personally think WoW gets the prize, but only cos I never played Everquest. Roll on the release of Diablo III! (Also made by Blizzard!) Gaming is so cool! : )
I currently am enjoying WoW, and look forward to the expansion: Cataclysm which is coming out . . . soon. That being said I actually started out playing the original Everquest, which was great. . . but felt that with some of the later expansions Sony sort of killed it an it lost a lot of its charm. The other problem with Everquest was the extensive time committment to get things done. Many from my EQ guild switched over to EQII on its release. The settings and graphics were beautiful, but at release the game play wasn't very friendly, there was too much group content, and if your friends weren't on, it was difficult to get anything done. For that reason most of us left EQII and moved onto WoW. WoW has a nice mix of single char, group, and raid content to keep you progressing. PVP is also very good in WoW and Boss fights are well tuned to keep the game interesting. Also Blizzard generally does a great job of releasing expansions/updates with minimal bugs which is why (IMHO) they have such a big following.
My friends and I have tried a few others, Runes of Magic - is very much a WoW clone, with some differences in char customization (and free too boot) though the fights are rather unimaginative. Aion is incredibly pretty and flight mechanics are a nice feature, but progression if far too linear, and the game once again looses its appeal as you get stuck in the grind. Well just my 2 cents.
I think that there are no the best mmorpg... each man have diferent "the best" and I think that in most cases the best MMO is which was your first MMO
i've played wow and i still do its pretty fun (w8ing for catalysm) but one game u didn't mention is EvE - Online, which right now is my personal favorite, there are some many options a player can affect the game much more than in any other game, but a lot of people don't like it because it involves very advanced and challenging game play. you have to be smart to even understand a bit of it.
just my thoughts
What about Meridian 59? I linked to you anyway
I think Eden Eternal is deffinatly the best mmo out there, but it does depend on what your into (-^_^-)

Hahaha, ok, at last a topic I can truly converse about. Ok, this is my opinion about the best MMORPG.
It all depends on the player and his mood. This doesn’t only go for MMORPGs’ but more for a variety of online games. The 1st question you are going to have to ask yourself is, “What type of crowd am I in the mood of?” Every MMORPG has a different online crowd and this is also highly dependable on whether the MMORPG is a pay to play or free to play. In pay to play people tend to be way friendlier as to free to play where certain people are going out to betray you.
With LOTRO you get a decent crowd of people but the general feelings is that everyone is purely on their own mission where as to with KAL Online and City of Heroes people like to chit chat. Most MMORPGs’ are fun to play depending in what type of mood you are, if you want action, play City of heroes, if you want epic, play LOTRO, if you want to meet weird and funny people, play WOW or Guildwars.... if you are angry at your dog, play an FPS ? that’s my opinion.
